WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that will allow users to connect with others using unique usernames instead of phone numbers.
The update, which was first spotted in WhatsApp’s beta testing programme, is expected to let users create usernames similar to those used on Instagram, Telegram, or X (formerly Twitter).
According to reports, the move is designed to enhance user privacy and security, particularly in large groups and business communities where sharing phone numbers can be uncomfortable or intrusive.
Leaked screenshots from the beta version reveal a new “Username” field within user profiles, allowing people to choose unique handles and hide their numbers from public view if they wish.
However, while the feature promises greater anonymity, experts have raised concerns about potential misuse, including username squatting and impersonation.
In response, WhatsApp is expected to introduce verification tools to prevent identity fraud and abuse.
