…As Abiodun charges youths to leverage opportunities in ICT
The United States Consulate in Nigeria has inaugurated a new digital innovation centre, *Window on America*, in Ogun State, aimed at equipping Nigerian youths with vital ICT skills and global exposure.
The initiative, a collaborative effort between the US Consulate and GFA Technologies, is situated at the Ogun State Tech Hub on Kobape Road, Abeokuta. It is designed as a hub for digital learning, entrepreneurship, cultural exchange, and knowledge sharing.
Speaking at the launch, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, encouraged young Nigerians to harness the vast opportunities presented by Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to become self-reliant and future-ready.
He described the establishment of *Window on America* at the tech hub as the result of a visionary partnership involving the Ogun State Government, through the Bureau of Information Technology, GFA Technologies, and the US mission in Nigeria.
“This initiative is not just a physical space but a bridge connecting the aspirations of our youth to global opportunities,” the governor said.
Governor Abiodun reiterated Ogun State’s recognition of digital innovation as a catalyst for sustainable economic growth, job creation, and improved living standards.
“This understanding has driven our substantial investments in digital infrastructure, from fibre optic networks to digital literacy programmes and innovation clusters across the state,” he stated.
He added that the centre offers more than just facilities, it provides a platform for knowledge sharing, skill development, and collaboration between Nigerian youths and their peers globally.
“This is where global ideas and values meet local ambition,” the governor remarked.
The centre, he revealed, provides free programmes including an English conversation club, digital literacy workshops, and discussions on international affairs. Visitors also gain access to American literature, journalism, and a wealth of digital resources.
“These are not simply conveniences; they are the essential instruments for the workforce of tomorrow,” he added.
Also speaking at the launch, the Acting Consular General of the United States, JoEllen Gorg, described *Window on America* as a testament to what can be achieved through strong and forward-thinking leadership.
She noted that the space is one of 29 American centres operating across Nigeria and the second to be established in Ogun State.
Gorg explained that the initiative supports the development of Nigerian youth by offering resources in entrepreneurship, leadership, technology, English language learning, cultural engagement, and academic exploration.
Equipped with modern computers, high-speed internet, and access to thousands of physical and digital books, along with millions of academic resources, the centre offers a unique opportunity for growth.
She invited youths, entrepreneurs, teachers, and creatives to take full advantage of the facilities, assuring them of continued support from the United States.
In his address, Debo Omololu, founder of GFA Technologies, said the company had invested ₦400 million in Ogun State and employed more than 1,000 software engineers at the hub.
He encouraged young Nigerians to seize the opportunity to gain relevant skills and remain competitive in the global marketplace.
Earlier in the day, the Acting Consular General paid a courtesy visit to Governor Abiodun at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, where both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in technology and youth development.
