The management of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has approved tuition discounts for its student-athletes who participated in the just-concluded West African University Games with medallists to pay 50 per cent of their fees.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Clement Adebooye, announced this on Friday while receiving the university’s representatives at the games, and members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun Chapter, in Osogbo.
Adebooye said athletes who participated in the competition without any medals would pay 60 per cent of their tuition fees.
He said that the initiative was aimed at recognising the athletes’ contributions and encouraging greater participation in sports alongside academic pursuits.
According to him, eighteen athletes represented the university at the competition, winning 16 medals comprising six silver and 10 bronze.
He added that the university would continue to support initiatives that promoted academic and sporting excellence.
“On behalf of the university management, we will offer a discount to our representatives at the event.
“Those who won medals for the university will pay 50 per cent of their school fees, while those who did not win medals will pay 60 per cent.
“The university is working towards providing sporting facilities comparable to those at its main campus at other satellite campuses,” Adebooye said.
Earlier, the Acting Director of Sports, Dr Tesleem Kolawole, commended the vice-chancellor for his support for sporting activities in the university.
Kolawole said Adebooye had consistently approved sports programmes and fulfilled his promise to provide a befitting sports complex for the institution.
He added that the school new stadium had made camping easier and more comfortable for coaches and athletes ahead of the competition.
“We must thank the vice-chancellor for always supporting sporting activities in the university,” he said.
Kolawole further explained that the vice-chancellor grant approval and support when he was approached that the institution wish to participate in the games.
