The Edo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a fleeing suspect, identified as Idemudia Jesurobo, who was allegedly caught engaging in unlawful same-sex acts.
Speaking to journalists on May 2, 2025, in Benin City on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) stated that preliminary investigations revealed the suspect and his partner were caught in a compromising position on March 28, 2025.
The incident occurred at Idemudia’s rented apartment, where the duo were apprehended by local vigilantes.
According to reports, while being escorted to the police station, Idemudia Jesurobo escaped vigilante custody. His partner, identified as Osas Ehigiator, was successfully brought to the station and detained.
However, Ehigiator died in police custody before he could be arraigned in court.
Reports indicate his death resulted from severe injuries sustained during a mob attack before his transfer to the police station.
The PPRO further disclosed that immediately after the incident was reported, a crack team of police officers was deployed to the suspect’s residence in the Ikhueniro quarters of Benin City.
While the principal suspect was absent when the team stormed the premises, two other alleged associates were arrested.
He emphasized that the command remains relentless in its efforts to apprehend Jesurobo and bring him to justice on charges bordering on unlawful same-sex relations and conspiracy.
He added that the family of the deceased, Osas Ehigiator, has petitioned relevant authorities, alleging that Jesurobo bears responsibility for their son’s untimely death.
The command appealed to members of the public with useful information that could lead to the arrest of Idemudia Jesurobo to report to the nearest security formation, assuring that all information will be treated with strict confidentiality.
In January 2014, the Federal Government of Nigeria signed the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act into law, criminalizing same-sex relationships and related conduct across the country.
Meanwhile, as of the time of filing this report, the whereabouts of Idemudia Jesurobo remain unknown.
