President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to inaugurate the  construction work of the 1000-km Sokoto-Badagry Coastal Highway in August.
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi disclosed this during a stakeholders engagement on the project in Birnin Kebbi.
Umahi said that he was directed by the president to come to Kebbi with some ministers and members of the National Assembly to unveil the scope of the project.
“The project is the old West African Trade Route, and the processes  for the commencement of the construction of the 1000km six lane super highway are in progress
” Kebbi State has lion share of the project, the first phase of construction will start here covering three lanes on each side of the road.
“120 kilometers section of the road lay in Sokoto State while 258 kilometers passes through Kebbi State, which is the largest beneficiary in the country.
” The super highway extends to Illela border town with Niger Republic in Sokoto State and down to Badagry in Lagos state,” he said.
The Minister added: “The Sokoto – Badagry corridor boasts of 53 dams that would be developed for Agriculture, electricity and serve as trade routes with other African countries.
” The super highway like the Lagos – Calabar Coastal Highway, is an investment venture for Nigeria’s economic prosperity.
” There are lots of benefits, security, tourism, smooth transportation and industrial growth”.
Umahi also spoke on the construction of the 55km Gadar Zaima – Zuru road in Kebbi of which only six kilometers had been repaired.
According to him, though the road is an NNPC project, the progress of work has not been good.
“I have invited the contractor to Abuja for explanation, it has been the behaviour of International contractors to abandon work after collecting payment, we will no longer tolerate this unbecoming attitude.
“Any contractor who is given project but could not do it, the federal government will revoke the contract and re-award it to another company, we want to encourage our local contractors,” he said.
The minister explained that the government was also looking into the 87 km Koko – Mahuta – Dabai road of which only six kilometers was reconstructed.
“I have the power to revoke the contract, Gov. Nasir Idris recommended revoking the work and allowing the Kebbi government to carry out the work and seek for reimbursement.
“The governor can lobby the President to seek for refund, you are dear to him,” Umahi said.
The minister said the federal government was also not happy about the pace of work on the Malando – Warrah road, explaining that appropriate action would be applied as remedy.
“There is 55km Argungu – Natsini road and the Jega – Kwanar Sanagi – Kebbe road which is not encouraging.
” The North must begin to enjoy concrete roads that will last up to between 100 – 200 years.
” From now, only contractors with the right equipment capable for building concrete roads would be engaged for road projects.
“Without good roads, it is like we are in prison, as good roads enhance agricultural mechanisation, security, smooth transportation, longevity of vehicles and boost the economy.
” This is part of the Renewed Hope Legacy Infrastructural Projects of President Tinubu,” the minister said.
In his remarks, Gov. Idris, described the Sokoto – Badagry Super Highway as indelible legacy of the All Progressive Congress (APC)’s  administration.
“We are part of it, we are in the APC, we believe in the ability of President Tinubu to deliver.
“He removed the dust off the file of the Sokoto – Badagry Super Highway project which has been kept dormant for almost 50 years.
“Tinubu is fulfilling the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians,” he said.
Idris, informed the minister that he would present a report to him in Abuja containing the input of the people of the state on the construction of the super highway for better results.
The Director, Federal Highways, Bridges and Design, Mr Bede Obioha, informed the stakeholders that the Sokoto – Badagry six lane Super Highway would start from Illela – Tangaza – Binji – Gwadabawa – Silame – Argungu in Sokoto State.

Minister of State for Works and Housing, Mr Umar El-Yakub, has commended the Management of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) on its efforts to provide affordable housing for citizens.

The minister gave the commendation during an inspection tour of the Zuba and Bwari Mass Housing Estates in Abuja on Tuesday.

The Zuba Mass Housing Project, which is over 90 per cent completion and soon to be commissioned, sits on 18 hectares of land and houses 748 units of three, two, one bedroom units and blocks of terrace duplexes.

The estate has 100 per cent completed standard infrastructure of roads drains, external water distribution network electricity reticulation, perimeter fence, water stations and other facilities for conducive habitation.

“This is a mixed development community. It is indeed a community because not only do you have the houses which are in one-bedroom two-bedroom a three-bedroom flats in condominium, as well as terrace houses of three bedrooms.

“They’re having an adequate facility. I was glad to see that even the 3-bedroom terrace houses were all en-suite.

” It’s not common to have houses that are all en-suite obviously provides more conveniences for the residents and as well as when they have visitors and guests.

“These are affordable housing. So for you to have such edifices as affordable is really worth commending the authority,” El-Yakub said.

Newsmen reports the Bwari project was conceived as part of the Federal Government’s Economic Sustainability Plan sits on 375 hectares to be completed in phases took off in March 2022.

The first phase covers 54 hectares for residential, commercial, educational, religious, special units and other supporting facilities. It will 337 units of one, two, three, and three bedroom terraced houses.

Commending on the Bwari project, El-Yakub said contractors had attained appreciable level of construction adding that it was another example of how infrastructure was impacting on the economy.

” This site has 72 contractors on site ranging from those doing facilities to infrastructure to services to the building itself. And each side has engaged direct jobs of about 3500 people and of course a huge number of indirect jobs.

“Therefore, this is one of those significant impacts of delivery on infrastructure, not only are you delivering the housing scheme as affordable to Nigerians but of course what goes into the project as we are delivering it.

“So, this is the Buhari Administration doing what its best known for, delivering on infrastructure for the development of Nigeria, Nigerians and for prosperity to the people,” the minister said.

Also speaking at the project visit, the Managing Director, FHA, Sen. Gbenga Ashafa, was optimistic that the first phase of project would be delivered within 48 months projected for its completion.

“All things being equal we’ve given this project 48 months to be delivered which means by the end of 2024, the 1st and 2nd sectors should be delivered, that means that the 337 units should be ready by the end of the 36th month.

“We are hoping we don’t run into financial challenges because the off takers are there, this location is very close to the law school here in Bwari and is very close to other educational institutions, like jamb and rest of them,” Ashafa said.
