President Bola Tinubu has mourned the passing of Ms Mabel Segun, a renowned writer, who died on Thursday, just a month after celebrating her 95th birthday.
In a statement released yesterday by the Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), Mr Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Ms Segun as having an extraordinary and enduring impact on Nigeria’s literary landscape over several decades.
The President noted that Ms Segun’s first book, My Father’s Daughter, published in 1965, received global acclaim and remains a guiding resource for aspiring writers, literary enthusiasts, and students alike.
President Tinubu prayed for the repose of the literary icon’s soul and offered divine comfort to her family during this difficult time.
Ms Segun was a poet, playwright, and writer of short stories and children’s books. She was a pioneer of children’s literature in Nigeria, founding the Children’s Literature Association of Nigeria in 1978 and establishing the Children’s Documentation and Research Centre in Ibadan in 1990.
