President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reached out to Nigerian-British former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, following a tragic road accident in Ogun State that left the boxer injured and claimed the lives of two of his associates.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President disclosed that he spoke with Joshua and his mother in separate telephone conversations to express his condolences and offer prayers in the aftermath of the incident.
The statement reads partly: “I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital. I also spoke with AJ’s mother and prayed for her.
“She was very appreciative of my call. Additionally, I spoke to Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was in the hospital with them. The Governor assured me that he will do everything possible to ensure AJ receives the best possible attention.”
President Tinubu had earlier expressed deep sympathy with the boxer in a message posted on his official X handle, describing the incident as a painful moment and urging unity and compassion in the face of tragedy.
In the message, the President commended Joshua’s discipline, courage and patriotism, noting that the boxer’s achievements and conduct have made him a symbol of national pride and an inspiration to many Nigerians at home and abroad.
The President also offered prayers for Joshua’s recovery and for the repose of the souls of the deceased, asking God to grant comfort and strength to the bereaved families as they mourn their loss.
The accident occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, prompting immediate medical attention for Joshua, who is currently receiving treatment.
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, was reported to be present at the hospital, coordinating efforts to ensure optimal care for the injured boxer.
President Tinubu, who is currently outside the country, reaffirmed his concern for Joshua’s well-being and the grieving families, stressing the importance of solidarity and shared humanity during moments of national sorrow.
