…cites urgent family considerations
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the sudden resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, following a formal request by the Police chief to vacate his office to attend to pressing family matters.
The announcement, which sent ripples through Nigeria’s security establishment on Tuesday, confirmed that the President received Egbetokun’s letter earlier today.
In a departure from typical administrative departures, the resignation was not prompted by tenure expiration or policy friction, but by what the President described as pressing family considerations.
Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was originally slated to remain in command until June 2027 under the four-year term stipulated by the amended Police Act.
In accepting the resignation, President Tinubu expressed deep appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service, specifically praising his professionalism and the steadfast commitment he demonstrated in fortifying the nation’s internal security during his leadership.
The Presidency noted that Egbetokun’s decision to prioritize family duties was met with respect and a recognition of his long-standing dedication to the Force.
To ensure there is no vacuum in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force during this transition, the President has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
Disu, known for his operational depth and leadership capacity, takes the helm at a critical period of national security challenges.
The appointment remains in an acting capacity pending a formal meeting of the Nigeria Police Council, which the President intends to convene shortly.
Following the Council’s consideration, AIG Disu’s name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation as the substantive Inspector-General.
This transition underscores the administration’s intent to maintain a steady and focused direction for the Force while honoring the personal exit of the outgoing IGP.
