Teachers’ day: You can’t sympathise with teachers when you can’t name your own teacher — Atiku knocks Tinubu

Former Vice President and 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the worsening cost of living and a perceived disconnect from educational roots.
In a statement issued on Monday through Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, marking World Teachers’ Day, Atiku reflected on his upbringing and the profound impact of his early educators in Jada.
The former vice president slammed the incumbent administration, arguing that a leader who cannot name a teacher who taught them or a classmate who sat beside them remains fundamentally removed from the daily struggles of educators.
He asserted that such a disconnect prevents leadership from enacting meaningful policies to make life dignified and affordable for teachers.
Atiku highlighted the severe economic pressures bearing down on educators, noting that soaring costs for food, transportation, rent, and electricity have left many teachers struggling to support their families or afford basic commutes.
He stressed that commemorative praise on a single day cannot substitute for fair working conditions, reliable support, and systemic economic relief, criticizing the current administration for failing to prioritize teacher welfare.
As an educationist and the founder of the American University of Nigeria, Atiku pledged that his administration would prioritize macroeconomic policies to bring down the cost of living, support decent jobs, and ensure that educators receive the tangible compensation and respect they deserve.
He concluded by thanking teachers across the country for their steadfast service and calling for a nationwide shift from mere words to concrete support.
