TCN takes delivery of two new transformers at Amuwo substation

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has taken delivery of two power transformers as the ongoing rehabilitation of the Amuwo 132/33kV Transmission Substation progresses.

In a statement released on Monday, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed that two 60MVA power transformers have been delivered to the site.

She noted that the units are set to replace the substation’s aging 30MVA transformers, a move that will effectively increase the facility’s capacity by an additional 60MVA and significantly enhance bulk power transmission.

She further added that to safeguard against total blackouts during the overhaul, TCN has deployed two mobile transformers to the site.

This temporary intervention allows the Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to continue offtaking power for their customers while the permanent upgrades are being installed.

Currently, contractors are focused on the installation of advanced Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment. This modernization is expected to eliminate the frequent breakdowns and downtime that plagued the substation’s older infrastructure.

“This major overhaul will increase the substation’s capability and eliminate the frequent breakdowns and downtime experienced with the old GIS,” Mbah stated.

She noted that while TCN is mindful of the temporary inconveniences caused by the works, the project which began in March remains on track for its July 2026 completion date.

The agency also appealed to affected consumers for patience, reiterating that the ongoing rehabilitation is a vital component of its nationwide commitment to expanding transmission capacity to meet growing electricity demands.
