TCN repairs four transmission towers on Afam–Elelenwo line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is repairing four transmission towers vandalised along the Afam/IPP–Elelenwo 132kV Double-Circuit Transmission Line in Rivers State, in what the company described as the fifth vandalism attack on the line in recent times.

The affected towers, T50, T51, T52 and T53, were discovered to have been vandalised on August 6, 2026, by TCN lines engineers from its Port Harcourt Region.

According to the company, the vandals removed and carted away tower members, leaving the structures requiring rehabilitation.

TCN said rehabilitation work is now ongoing on the four towers as it moves to restore the affected infrastructure and protect the transmission corridor.

The latest incident is part of a recurring vandalism problem on the Afam/IPP–Elelenwo line. TCN’s records show that several towers on the same line were also vandalised in 2022. In July that year, towers T40, T43, T52 and T143 were affected, while towers T42, T51, T46 and T54 were vandalised in October.

The repeated attacks have made the protection of transmission infrastructure a persistent concern in the Port Harcourt transmission region.

TCN said the latest rehabilitation is being carried out as work progresses on the affected structures, while urging stakeholders to support efforts to prevent further attacks.

The company called on communities and other stakeholders along the transmission corridor to join hands with it in tackling vandalism, warning that the continued destruction of transmission assets threatens the stability and reliability of the national grid.

“Vandalism of transmission infrastructure” remains a major challenge for the power sector because damage to towers and other network components can compromise the ability to transmit electricity safely and reliably.

TCN urged residents and other stakeholders around the Afam/IPP–Elelenwo corridor to remain vigilant and support the protection of the infrastructure as rehabilitation work continues.
