TCN expands power capacity to boost national grid

Nigeria’s power grid just got a lift as the Transmission Company of Nigeria commissioned new high-capacity transmission links, unlocking stronger electricity flow from the Ihovbor axis.

The company confirmed that it successfully energised the turn-in-turn-out connections for the Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission lines at 19:05 on April 23, 2026, marking a key upgrade in the country’s transmission infrastructure.

With the commissioning, the Ihovbor corridor is now fully operational, delivering increased evacuation capacity for major generation companies, including Niger Delta Power Holding Company and Azura Power.

Early operational data shows the Ihovbor/Benin line currently transmitting about 200 megawatts, while the Ihovbor/Ajaokuta line is moving approximately 90 megawatts, figures expected to improve as load optimisation continues.

The development is significant for Nigeria’s power sector, where generation capacity has often been constrained by limited transmission infrastructure. By expanding evacuation channels, the new lines are expected to reduce bottlenecks, allowing more generated power to reach distribution networks and end users.

Beyond increased capacity, the project is also aimed at improving grid stability and reliability across affected regions, particularly in areas linked to the Benin and Ajaokuta transmission routes.

Industry observers say the move reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen the national grid and maximise output from existing power plants, especially within the Niger Delta corridor.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with energy supply challenges, projects like this highlight the critical role of transmission upgrades in bridging the gap between power generation and actual electricity delivery.
