On February 9, 2024, a violent incident unfolded in a Nigerian community when OLAYOKUN SAHEED ABIOLA and his male friend DELE OGUNYEMI were allegedly discovered in an intimate moment(SEXUAL INTERCOURSE) at Dele’s residence at 22 Akinolu Street Obada Abeokuta at around 3:15pm. Neighbors who witnessed the scene reportedly raised an alarm, attracting a crowd that quickly escalated into a mob.
The two men were subjected to a brutal assault by enraged community members, who claimed the encounter was in violation of cultural, religious, and legal norms. Both Abiola and Ogunyemi were severely beaten. Abiola sustained injuries to his head, right leg, and waist, along with multiple bruises. Ogunyemi suffered extensive trauma and tragically succumbed to his injuries due to internal bleeding on February 10, a day after the attack.
In Nigeria, homosexuality remains criminalized under national law, carrying a prison sentence of up to 14 years. Cultural and religious sentiments, particularly within the Yoruba community, further contribute to widespread hostility toward LGBTQ+ individuals. However, while social disapproval may explain the community’s reaction, it cannot justify the violence meted out to the victims.
Following the attack, concerned bystanders eventually contacted the Nigeria Police, who arrived to disperse the mob and rescue the victims. The two men were taken to God’s Hope Hospital, where Abiola was treated and discharged on February 11. Ogunyemi, unfortunately, did not survive.
Since the incident, Abiola has lived in constant fear, facing threats and harassment from members of the community because of his perceived sexual orientation(GAY). Though he survived the physical attack, he continues to endure psychological trauma and insecurity, with little hope for consistent protection or justice.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the ongoing human rights violations faced by sexual minorities in Nigeria. No one deserves to be attacked or lose their life because of who they are or whom they love. It underscores the urgent need for societal change, legal reform, and protection for all citizens—regardless of their sexual orientation.
