Stockbrokers to explore capital market’s role in achieving Nigeria’s $1trn economy

Stockbrokers under the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) are set to convene a high-level workshop focused on the capital market’s contribution to the Federal Government’s ambition of transforming Nigeria into a $1 trillion economy.
The workshop, themed “Capital Formation in Nigeria: Strengthening Industry, Institutions, and Markets to Bolster a $1 Trillion Economy,” will take place next week at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The event will bring together capital market professionals, policymakers, and industry leaders to examine strategies for deepening capital formation and accelerating economic development through stronger institutions and robust market structures.
President of CIS, Mr Oluropo Dada, said the gathering would serve as a platform to assess current challenges and unlock opportunities in Nigeria’s capital formation landscape.
“This workshop is a timely forum to outline how the capital market can be a cornerstone in realising the $1 trillion economy vision. We’ll explore practical ways to strengthen institutions, expand industries, and create an enabling environment that attracts investment,” Dada stated.
He explained that the discussions would provide direction for policymakers on how to harness the full potential of the capital market. Key areas of focus include regulatory efficiency, investor confidence, and alignment with the rule of law.
“We want to establish a clear agenda that positions the capital market as a critical driver of economic expansion,” Dada added.
Group Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group) Plc, Alhaji Umaru Kwairanga, expressed pride in hosting the workshop at the seat of government, noting the administration’s backing of capital market development.
“This workshop reflects the strategic alignment between government priorities and market-based solutions. The capital market has already shown strong support for President Tinubu’s economic reforms and is well-placed to champion this vision,” Kwairanga said.
Also speaking, CIS 1st Vice President, Fiona Ahimie, described the workshop’s theme as highly relevant, emphasising the potential to unlock internal capital and promote self-sustained growth.
“Nigeria has untapped domestic resources that, if properly mobilised, can fuel industrialisation and institutional development. This will not only meet our local economic demands but also strengthen our position across Africa,” she said.
The workshop is expected to produce actionable recommendations that will guide government efforts to harness the capital market’s strengths for national prosperity.
