Operatives of the Ifo Police Division in Ogun State have arrested six individuals, including community leaders and hunters, for allegedly attacking and killing several cattle belonging to a herder, Usman Abubakar.

The suspects, identified as Taiwo Obasa, Gbolahan Abdullahi, Ojo Musiliu, Okwu Odey, Zomisin Lulu, and Abiodun Shoyoye, are accused of killing four cows, butchering them, and distributing the meat among themselves.

Two cows were also injured, and four others remain missing.

The incident occurred on February 25, 2025, when Abubakar’s herders were moving cattle through Oba Karounwi Village near Ifo.

According to police spokesperson Omolola Odutola, the herders were confronted by a group of local community leaders (Baales) from Oba’s Gidimo and Oba Oseni villages, accompanied by hunters.

Despite the herders’ pleas for the animals to be spared, the group allegedly attacked the cattle.

“The Ogun State Police Command is actively investigating the incident, which was reported on February 28, 2025.

“Mr. Usman Abubakar of Olorunsogo Village reported that his herders were confronted while moving cattle through Oba Karounwi Village, and four cows were killed, butchered, and distributed among the assailants; two cows were injured, and four went missing,” Odutola confirmed to journalists.

Upon receiving the report, officers from the Ifo division quickly visited the scene and arrested the suspects.

During interrogation, Obasa and Abdullahi admitted to witnessing the attack and accepting meat from a hunter named Terry, who was involved in the incident. The police have since recovered the meat.

Odutola also revealed that the implicated Baales had previously reported an assault by the herders to the Agbado division, which led to further scrutiny of the case.

The investigation will now be handled by the Ifo divisional police officer.

Meanwhile, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has implemented measures to ensure peaceful coexistence between the parties involved.

He urged the public to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate the situation.
