Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday led a host of political icons to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, for the wedding fatiha of children of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.

What would ordinarily be a private family ceremony quickly transformed into a high-profile national gathering, drawing governors, federal lawmakers, ministers, and influential political stakeholders from across the country.

The solemn Islamic rites were conducted in line with tradition, yet the sheer presence of Nigeria’s political elite gave the occasion an unmistakable aura of prestige. Among the dignitaries present were former Vice President Babagana Kingibe, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau.

Governors from Kaduna, Gombe, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kano, Nasarawa, Sokoto, and Katsina States also attended, further underlining the political weight and national reach of the gathering.

The Vice President played a symbolic role during the ceremony, standing as Waliyi (guardian) in the marriage rites of one of Governor Zulum’s daughters, in accordance with Islamic tradition. He offered heartfelt prayers for the couples, urging them to build their homes on patience, respect, and unwavering understanding.

The event featured multiple unions within the Zulum family, marking a day of joy and renewal. Despite the calibre of attendees, the ceremonies retained the simplicity and spiritual focus that define Islamic wedding rites, blending humility with grandeur.

Members of the Federal Executive Council were also well represented, with ministers from key sectors, including agriculture, education, health, housing, and economic planning, joining the celebration.

Also in attendance was former Borno State governor Ali Modu Sheriff, alongside other prominent political figures, party leaders, and associates.

Beyond the celebration, the gathering offered a rare glimpse of unity and camaraderie among Nigeria’s political class, as leaders set aside official engagements to honour one of their own.

For many, the event not only celebrated family unions but also served as a moment of political camaraderie, bringing together leaders across different tiers of government in a rare display of unity and shared cultural heritage.

For many observers, the event reflected Governor Zulum’s growing stature in national politics, as well as the enduring significance of traditional and religious ceremonies in fostering social cohesion among Nigeria’s elite.
