Senator Rufai Hanga resigns from NNPP, set to join APC

Senator Rufai Hanga, representing Kano Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has resigned his membership from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

Hanga announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP in Dakata Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The Senator said his decision was reached after careful reflection and personal deliberation.

He explained that he decided to withdraw his party membership to focus on personal commitments and pursue a different career path.

In the letter, Hanga thanked the ward chairman, executive committee, and other party members for the opportunities, support, and fellowship he enjoyed during his tenure.

He also acknowledged the relationships he developed with party members and the experiences they shared while participating in political activities.

“I cherish the relationships built and the experiences shared during our political activities together,” Hanga said.

The Senator further requested that his name be removed from the party’s membership register at the ward level.

He submitted his NNPP membership card along with the letter to finalize the process.

Hanga concluded by wishing the NNPP and its members well in their future political endeavors.
His resignation comes amid reports of an impending defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Although the senator did not disclose his next destination in the letter, his reported plan to join the ruling party has already drawn attention within political circles.

This development is likely to contribute to the growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as politicians across various parties reassess their affiliations and political interests.

Hanga’s exit from the NNPP could also carry implications for the party’s structure in Kano State, particularly in Kano Central Senatorial District, where he maintains a strong political presence.
