The Nigerian Senate has kicked off a high-profile public hearing on the 2026 Appropriation Bill, aiming to ensure that budget allocations translate into real outcomes for Nigerians. The one-day interactive session, organised by the Senate Committee on Appropriations, seeks to strengthen fiscal discipline, accelerate infrastructure delivery, and improve national security through effective budget implementation.

Chaired by Senator (Dr) Adeola Solomon Olamilekan, speaking on behalf of Senate President, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, officials highlighted the critical role of revenue availability in implementing the budget. The Senate President praised the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, which have significantly expanded the nation’s revenue base.

“With more revenue, more projects can be executed for the benefit of all Nigerians,” the Senate President said in a speech read during the session.

He described the hearings as a moment of national reflection, urging the country to confront pressing questions: Where are we? Where are we going? Are our resources aligned with our aspirations?

The speech highlighted the harsh realities facing Nigerians, including fiscal pressures, rising inflation, infrastructure deficits, unemployment, and security challenges. Yet, he encouraged resilience and strategic action, drawing inspiration from the national Coat of Arms. “The eagle does not flee from the storm; it rises upon it. This should be our national story: in the face of challenge, we do not descend into despair, but ascend with resolve,” he said.

Senator Akpabio further emphasized that effective budgeting requires not just more spending, but smarter spending. He urged focus on fiscal discipline, tax reforms, and meticulous implementation to ensure that appropriations create tangible impacts in people’s lives.

He also commended the Senate Committee on Appropriations for their diligence, transparency, and foresight in steering the budget process toward accountability and national recovery.

The public hearing underscores the Senate’s determination to make the 2026 budget a tool for national transformation driving economic growth, improving infrastructure, and enhancing the welfare of all Nigerians.
