A violent assault on a private residence in January 2023 has left a security guard dead and a married couple recovering from severe injuries following a raid by suspected political thugs.
The attack, which targeted the home of a New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) aspirant, is being investigated as a politically motivated hate crime linked to the 2023 general elections.
On January 23, 2023, assailants stormed the home of Hon. Agosa Elizabeth Oluwafunke, an aspirant for the Lagos State House of Assembly, and her husband, Agosa Sonayon Aina.
According to police reports, the attackers vandalized the property, destroying parts of the building before turning on the occupants.
Tragically, a security guard on duty was killed during the violence, highlighting the escalating brutality of election-related intimidation at the time.
Both Hon. Agosa and her husband sustained significant injuries during the assault and were rushed to the hospital immediately following the incident.
Medical records obtained by our correspondent confirm that the couple remained on admission for a week, receiving treatment until their discharge on January 30.
Investigators recovered several items suggesting the attack was premeditated and politically driven. A threat letter allegedly delivered prior to the attack warned the occupants against participating in political activities.
Furthermore, political posters were found at the scene, reinforcing suspicions that the violence was directly connected to tensions surrounding the 2023 election cycle.
Photographic evidence from the scene documents this extensive damage to the property, as well as the injuries suffered by the victims.
The incident was covered by local newspapers, adding to a troubling list of election-period crimes involving arson, intimidation, and targeted violence.
Despite a police investigation into the homicide and assault, residents in the area report that fear remains high, noting that no arrests have been publicly announced.
The death of the security guard and the attack on the Agosa family serve as a grim reminder of the deadly consequences of political intolerance in Nigeria, even within the sanctity of private homes.
