Sanwo-Olu, Adeleke, Abiodun applaud appointment of Tunji Disu as acting IGP
The appointment of Mr. Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police by President Bola Tinubu has drawn widespread acclaim from South-West governors, who see his leadership as a turning point for national security.
Governors Ademola Adeleke, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Dapo Abiodun have unified in their support for the new police chief following the resignation of his predecessor, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun.
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State hailed the selection of Tunji Disu as a masterstroke, pointing to the Acting IGP’s rare track record of having served across all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.
Adeleke expressed firm confidence that Disu's deep respect for the rule of law and professional experience would restore public trust in the Force.
Beyond the appointment, Adeleke also commended President Tinubu’s resolve to establish State Police, noting that such a move would empower governors to extinguish security threats before they escalate into a national nightmare.
He highlighted Osun’s own commitment to safety, including the recent recruitment of 1,500 Amotekun personnel to complement federal forces.
In Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the elevation of Tunji Disu as a significant honor to the state. Sanwo-Olu emphasized that Disu’s three decades of service, most notably his reformative leadership of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad, prepared him for the national stage.
The Governor remarked that Disu has a proven track record of performance at state, national, and international levels, making him the ideal candidate to meet the high expectations of Nigerians for a courageous and accountable police force.
He noted that Disu’s experience in various commands across the country ensures he possesses the capacity to deliver on his new mandate effectively.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State joined his colleagues in congratulating the new Acting IGP while simultaneously paying tribute to the outgoing Kayode Egbetokun.
Abiodun described Egbetokun as a proud son of Ogun State whose dedication to internal security remains a point of pride for the nation.
Turning his attention to the future, Abiodun urged Tunji Disu to prioritize a results-oriented agenda by focusing on intelligence-driven policing, improved officer welfare, and stronger community engagement.
He also emphasized the need to leverage technology for crime detection and to reinforce internal discipline as the cornerstone of the new leadership.
The governors collectively reaffirmed their support for the Federal Government’s security reforms, signaling a period of close collaboration between the sub-nationals and the new police leadership.
They emphasized that a professional, non-partisan, and technologically advanced police force is essential for securing the lives and properties of all Nigerians.
