The Lagos State Police Command has addressed a trending video showing a Rapid Response Squad (RRS) patrol vehicle, designated as ‘RRS Attack 07’, driving against traffic, explaining that the maneuver was part of a lawful emergency response.
According to a statement issued on November 4, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the RRS patrol team led by an inspector was dispatched by the Command’s Control Room following distress calls regarding severe traffic congestion.
As the closest available unit, the team navigated the opposite lane to reach the source of the obstruction, clear the gridlock, and restore the flow of traffic.
The apolice noted that under Regulation 158 of the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2012, law enforcement officers engaged in emergency situations or civil protection are permitted to bypass standard traffic signs while exercising due regard for public safety.
The command emphasized that the action was a calculated operational decision to prevent traffic gridlock from spreading to adjoining roads.
However, the Command strongly condemned the confrontation, harassment, and deliberate obstruction directed at the officers by members of the public during the incident. Noting that the individuals blocked the road and infringed upon the rights of other motorists, the police stated that such behavior violates Section 98 of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020.
The Police also cautioned social media content creators against provoking or obstructing security personnel solely to generate sensational online content, warning that offenders will face legal consequences.
Reiterating the Command’s openness to constructive public scrutiny, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai assured residents that the force remains dedicated to maintaining public order, protecting lives, and ensuring the free movement of vehicles across the state.
