Reps committee sets July 31 hearing on CNG policy implementation

The House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on the Implementation of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Policy has announced plans to commence its investigation into the rollout of the initiative on Thursday, July 31.

In a statement on Tuesday, the committee’s chairman, Rep. Usman Jaha (APC-Borno), invited stakeholders and members of the public to submit memoranda for consideration.

He explained that the investigation aligns with the committee’s constitutional mandate under Sections 62, 88 and 89, as well as a House resolution calling for the establishment of additional CNG conversion centres nationwide.

According to Jaha, the committee will review the strategies deployed for implementing the CNG policy, evaluate safety protocols, financing and investment frameworks, regulatory oversight and the long-term sustainability of the programme within the context of Nigeria’s energy transition.

The public hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Conference Room 231, House of Representatives Building, National Assembly Complex. Jaha confirmed that relevant government agencies, private investors, energy experts and civil society organisations have been invited to participate, either by submitting memoranda or attending the session.

“All submissions should be delivered to the Committee Secretariat, Room 303, 3rd Floor, White House, National Assembly Complex. For further information, stakeholders may contact the committee clerk on 0703 038 3400,” the statement read.

The hearing will examine progress made in adopting CNG as a cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative to petrol following the 2023 removal of fuel subsidy.

Jaha stressed that the CNG project is central to the Federal Government’s post-subsidy reform agenda, aimed at reducing fuel costs, promoting domestic gas utilisation and attracting private sector investment into Nigeria’s gas value chain.

He reaffirmed the committee’s dedication to ensuring transparency, accountability and efficiency in advancing the country’s energy transition.
