The Lagos State House of Assembly has denied reports suggesting that it allocated funds in the 2026 Appropriation Law to buy houses in Abuja for its members.
In a statement jointly signed by Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, and Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh, Chairman of the House Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, the Assembly described the allegations as completely false and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
The statement said: “There is no provision whatsoever in the 2026 Budget for the purchase of houses in Abuja or anywhere else for members of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
“This report is a fabrication peddled by individuals seeking political mischief.”
The lawmakers emphasised that the Assembly’s work, responsibilities, and constituencies are entirely within Lagos State.
“It is illogical and irresponsible to suggest that public funds would be used for personal housing outside our jurisdiction,” they added.
The statement also highlighted that the 2026 budget is already public and open for scrutiny, reflecting the state’s long-standing commitment to accountability and transparency.
The Assembly further noted that its capital expenditure for 2026 constitutes less than 0.04 per cent of Lagos State’s total capital expenditure and stressed that, historically, the House often does not fully access its approved budget.
According to the lawmakers, the false reports are part of a broader trend of election-season propaganda aimed at eroding public trust and undermining democratic institutions.
“We challenge those behind this baseless claim to provide credible evidence or retract their statements immediately. Failure to do so may result in legal action,” the Assembly warned.
Reaffirming its commitment to good governance and the welfare of Lagos residents, the statement added: “Our activities remain aligned with the objectives of the 2026 Budget of Shared Prosperity. Lagosians should always verify information through official sources and disregard misleading claims.”
