First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has commissioned 50 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses in Edo State.
She also launched a ₦1 billion economic empowerment programme for 5,000 beneficiaries.
The buses are expected to improve public transportation in the state, providing commuters with another transport option while supporting the Federal Government’s drive to expand the use of CNG as an alternative vehicle fuel.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Tinubu commended Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for prioritising public transportation and described the initiative as an investment in mobility and economic opportunity.
She said improved access to affordable transportation would help students get to school, traders reach markets and workers commute to their workplaces.
The First Lady also highlighted the employment opportunities associated with the growing CNG sector, including jobs for technicians, engineers, drivers, mechanics, safety personnel and fleet managers.
She encouraged the Edo State Government to prioritise training and capacity-building to enable young people to benefit from emerging opportunities in the sector.
Alongside the bus commissioning, Tinubu announced a ₦1 billion economic empowerment intervention for 5,000 beneficiaries, with each expected to receive ₦200,000.
She said the programme was designed to support women, young people and vulnerable groups, strengthen livelihoods and help beneficiaries build more self-reliant businesses.
The two interventions combine investment in public transportation with financial support for small businesses and household livelihoods in Edo State.
