REA solar project at Lokoja varsity nears 99.6% completion

Under Phase III of the Energizing Education Programme (EEP), the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has announced that the major power project at Federal University Lokoja is nearing total completion.
The installation features a 1.7MW solar hybrid system paired with a 4.064MWh battery storage unit and a 2.0MVA backup generator to ensure constant reliability for the institution.
The project has also seen the completion of 218 streetlights across the campus to enhance safety and nocturnal functionality.
Beyond immediate power generation, the initiative focuses on long-term human capital development. Over 50 new jobs were created during the implementation phase, and a world-class Renewable Energy Training Centre has been established on campus to train at least 100 students annually.
This infrastructure is designed to bridge the energy access gap in academic environments while building the technical expertise required for Nigeria’s broader clean energy transition.
