Police probe teenager’s death at UI swimming pool

The Oyo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of an unidentified teenage boy whose body was found at the swimming pool of the University of Ibadan, with authorities treating the case as suspected murder.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, saying detectives had commenced a thorough probe to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the police, the victim, believed to be between 14 and 15 years old, was found floating on the surface of the swimming pool on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
“The Oyo State Police Command is aware of the report circulating in the media concerning the discovery of the body of an unidentified teenage boy at the University of Ibadan swimming pool on 26th March, 2026,” Ayanlade said.
“Factually, information was received from the institution’s Chief Security Officer that the body of the victim, aged about 14–15 years, was sighted on the surface of the swimming pool earlier that day,” he added.
He said police detectives promptly visited the scene for preliminary investigations, noting that the body had already been removed from the pool before their arrival.
“Preliminary findings revealed that the body had been removed from the pool and placed beside it prior to the arrival of detectives,” Ayanlade said.
The police spokesperson disclosed that signs observed on the corpse raised suspicion of possible foul play.
“Blood was observed oozing from the mouth and nose, with slight bruises on the nose,” he said.
He added that items suspected to belong to the deceased, including a pair of shoes and a shirt, were recovered near the pool.

According to him, the victim was evacuated to the General Hospital, Adeoyo, Ibadan, where he was confirmed dead on arrival and his remains deposited at the mortuary pending identification and autopsy.

The police said the case is being treated as suspected murder, assuring that efforts are underway to uncover the truth.

He urged members of the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information while investigations continue.
