Despite public condemnation and Nigeria’s stringent laws prohibiting homosexuality, two young men have been caught in the act and face serious legal consequences.
The suspects, identified as Mr Ebinum Francis Oritsegbugbemi and Mr Ebe Nsisong, were reportedly caught engaging in same-sex activity inside a private apartment in the Iba area of Lagos State on Monday, January 13, 2025 in which the former escaped.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident came to light when a worker in the building raised an alarm over suspicious activities between the two men. Local residents responded by storming the apartment, where the men were allegedly found in the middle of a romantic act.
They were reportedly beaten and tortured by the angry mob before the police were invited to the scene. Mr Ebinum Francis, however, managed to escape before police officers arrived.
Since the incident, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and local vigilantes, have launched a manhunt to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
Same-sex relationships remain a criminal offence under Nigerian law. On January 7, 2014, former President Dr Goodluck Jonathan signed the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act (SSMPA) into law. The legislation prohibits marriage, cohabitation or public show of affection between persons of the same gender.
The law metes up to 10 years’ imprisonment for anyone found guilty of participating in, supporting or operating gay clubs, societies or organisations.
Confirming the incident, police authorities said investigations were ongoing to arrest Mr Ebinum Francis, assuring that he would face the full wrath of the law.
The public has been urged to report any useful information to the nearest police station. Authorities promised to handle all information with utmost confidentiality.
