Police arrest suspected cultist, recover pistol, live cartridge in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old suspected cultist, Yusuf Lamina Adigun, and recovered a locally made pistol loaded with one live cartridge during a stop-and-search operation in the Ijaiye/Ojokoro area of the state.

The Command disclosed on Saturday that the arrest was made as part of ongoing efforts to combat cultism and other violent crimes across Lagos.

According to the Police, operatives intercepted a motorcycle conveying three passengers during a routine operation. A search conducted on the passengers led to the recovery of the firearm from Adigun.

The Police said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly belongs to the Eiye Confraternity.

The suspect was also said to have confessed during interrogation that he and other members of the cult group, who escaped arrest, were on their way to carry out an attack on some individuals before they were intercepted by the operatives.

The Command said the suspect remains in police custody while efforts have been intensified to apprehend the fleeing members of the gang and recover additional weapons that may be in their possession.

Reacting to the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive security operations aimed at tackling cultism and other violent crimes in the state.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and support the Police with timely and credible information that would help prevent crime and enhance public safety.

The Police reiterated that sustained collaboration between security agencies and members of the public remains crucial to maintaining peace and security across Lagos State.
