Police arraign man, 28, for allegedly stealing copper wire

The Police on Thursday arraigned a 28-year-old man, Popoola Sunday, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing copper wire valued at N150,000.

The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a charge of stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Olubu Apata, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Sept. 10 at about 12.00 p.m. in Aisegba-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant stole copper wire valued at N150,000, belonging to Aisegba Comprehensive High School, Aisegba-Ekiti.

Apata said the defendant went to the school and stole the wire, but the Police later recovered it.

He said the offence contravened Section 302(1)(a) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Counsel to the defendant, Mrs Blessing Falaye, urged the court to grant him bail, promising that he would not jump bail.

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Ajibade, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum.

She adjourned the case until Oct. 20 for hearing.
