Mr Latep Dabang, Political Adviser to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, has resigned his appointment and returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC), triggering fresh shifts in the state’s political landscape.

Dabang, a former chairman of the APC in Plateau, was removed from his position in 2021 following internal party disagreements. He subsequently defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022, where he played a prominent role as Director-General of the PDP’s Presidential and Governorship Campaign Council during the 2023 general election.

Following the PDP’s victory at the polls, he was appointed as Political Adviser to Governor Mutfwang, a role he has now formally stepped away from.

In his resignation letter dated 30 June 2025, Dabang expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under the current administration, saying: “I deeply appreciate the opportunity to have served your administration. I am grateful for the experience.”

Sources within the Plateau APC confirmed that Dabang had previously reached out to the party leadership, notifying them of his intention to return, along with a group of loyal supporters. The party is reportedly preparing a formal welcome ceremony for the defectors.

Dabang’s move comes on the heels of a wave of defections from the PDP in Plateau. In recent weeks, notable political figures such as Senator Istifanus Gyang, Patrick Dakum, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria Gyang Zi have also exited the ruling party and pitched their tents with the APC, signalling mounting tensions within the PDP and reshaping the state’s political equilibrium.

Observers say the return of influential figures like Dabang could significantly bolster the APC’s standing ahead of future elections and poses fresh challenges for Governor Mutfwang’s administration.
