Party member flees following threats

Fresh concerns regarding electoral violence and political intimidation in Nigeria have emerged following reports that a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Mr. Felix J. Rufus, has gone into hiding.

Rufus allegedly fled after receiving repeated threats to his life linked to his activities during the 2023 elections.

Sources familiar with the situation disclosed that Rufus, who was actively involved in the political process, began receiving threats after witnessing an incident involving suspected political thugs during the polls held on March 18, 2023.

He reportedly observed hoodlums snatching ballot boxes at a polling area in Edo State, an event that allegedly exposed him to harassment and intimidation by unidentified individuals.

The persistent threats eventually forced Rufus to abandon his residence out of fear for his safety, and his current whereabouts remain unknown.

Beyond the electoral incident, sources alleged that Rufus had also expressed concerns regarding the state of the nation and prevailing economic hardships, comments that reportedly attracted further hostility from certain individuals.

This development underscores the ongoing safety challenges faced by political party members, election observers, and ordinary voters in Nigeria, particularly in regions prone to political volatility.

Observers continue to warn that despite electoral reforms, acts of harassment and politically motivated threats remain a significant barrier to healthy democratic participation.
