Oyo State set to boost power supply to 300MW by 2027 – Energy Commissioner

The Oyo State Government has unveiled a strategic roadmap to significantly increase its electricity generation capacity, aiming to reach 300 Megawatts (MW) by the second quarter of 2027.

During a press briefing held recently, the Oyo state Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Prof. Dahud K. Shangodoyin, detailed the state’s ambitious plans to achieve energy independence and foster economic growth.

Prof. Shangodoyin noted that the state’s current power supply fluctuates between *50MW and 182MW, which represents less than 25% of the estimated 520MW minimum required to drive meaningful economic expansion in Oyo State.

To bridge this gap, he disclosed that state has initiated several key projects including  Ibadan Independent Gas Project,  a 12MW gas-powered facility expected to come online within the next two months, bringing the total capacity to 194MW.

He also added that the state plans to add another 120MW between the second quarter of 2026 and Q2 2027, targeting a total of 300MW.

To ensure high service standards, the Commissioner also announced the launch of a new Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission (OYSERC) website and communication channels.

He pledged that the commission would address all public complaints regarding tariffs and power supply within 72 hours.

"Oyo State is now in charge of its electricity destiny," the Commissioner concluded, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to building the reliable infrastructure necessary for sustainable economic development.
