The Oyo State Government has welcomed the release of 20 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps who were recently abducted while traveling to their orientation camp in Imo State, while urging the Federal Government to step up efforts against nationwide kidnapping and banditry.

Speaking on Wednesday, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Dotun Oyelade, noted that the safe return of the corps members has brought immense relief to the state government, their families, and the people of Oyo State.

While congratulating the federal, Imo, and Oyo state governments on the successful resolution, Oyelade emphasized that the incident underscores the urgent need for more robust security measures.

He stressed that the Federal Government, possessing the primary constitutional powers and capacity to tackle national security challenges, must take more proactive steps to protect citizens.

Oyelade expressed concern that despite regular assurances from the Presidency, banditry and kidnappings continue to plague various communities, with an estimated 200 Nigerians still held captive in forests across the country.

The 20 prospective corps members were freed following concerted rescue efforts. Their release was officially confirmed on Wednesday when Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma personally informed the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, during a telephone conversation.
