Ondo Gov't licenses 100MW power projects to boost electricity supply
The Ondo State Government, through the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (OSERB), has granted power generation and distribution licences to Ore Power Ltd. and ASB Valiant Electricity Ltd. under the Ondo State Electricity Law, 2020.
The development, announced at a ceremony in Akure, marks a step toward improving electricity supply and driving economic growth across the state.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Alabi, commended Gov. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for his commitment to transforming the electricity sector.
Alabi said the administration is focused on building a functional, independent, and investor-driven electricity market in the state.
He also acknowledged reforms by the Federal Government under Pres. Bola Tinubu, particularly the Electricity Act, which he said has enabled states to play more active roles in their power sectors.
According to him, the licensing initiative is aimed at ensuring stable electricity supply for households and industries, noting that power remains a key driver of economic development.
He outlined key interventions by the state government, including subsidised metering to promote transparency, the establishment of three Special Electricity Courts for dispute resolution, and the development of a statewide electricity grid covering Ondo South, Central, and North.
He also disclosed the state government’s intention to takeover NDPHC assets for commercial operations and the creation of a structured and regulated state electricity market.
“Ondo State is no longer waiting for solutions; we are creating them through coordinated efforts in power generation, evacuation, and distribution,” Alabi said.
Earlier, the OSERB State Coordinator, Engr. Stephen Bolawole, said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to building a reliable and investment-driven electricity market.
He disclosed that Ore Power Ltd., a state-backed embedded generation company, is expected to deliver up to 100MW of electricity to improve supply reliability and support industrial growth in the Ore axis and surrounding areas.
Bolawole added that ASB Valiant Electricity Ltd. will construct an 18km Omotoso–Ore 33KV double-circuit line to enhance power evacuation and distribution to end users.
He noted that the licences are binding legal instruments aligned with both the Ondo State Electricity Law, 2020, and the national Electricity Act, urging the companies to meet regulatory standards and performance expectations.
