Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has pledged to adopt the developmental model used by Senator Godswill Akpabio during his tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom State to build a new Edo State.

This statement was issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Fred Itua, on Sunday.

Okpebholo made these comments during a reception held in his honour in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, where he acknowledged the significant developmental achievements of Akpabio during his tenure as governor from 2007 to 2015.

He expressed his intention to apply the same approach to transform and reposition Edo State.

Okpebholo remarked, “The man I affectionately call ‘the uncommon man’ made tremendous strides during his time as governor. Today, Akwa Ibom’s history cannot be complete without recognising Akpabio’s transformation of the state.”

“Before Akpabio became governor, Akwa Ibom was often written off. But in just eight years, he achieved so much that today, Uyo is regarded as one of the finest cities in the country.”

He continued, “When I became governor, I decided to come, see, and adopt the same developmental model for my people. After seeing and hearing everything during this visit, I am more confident that what we plan to achieve with the mandate given to us by the people of Edo is achievable. Akpabio did it in Akwa Ibom, and we will do it in Edo.”

Okpebholo also praised Akpabio’s legislative achievements, noting his leadership in the National Assembly. He commended Akpabio’s ability to coordinate the legislative arm and his effective role in balancing and complementing the executive for the benefit of the country.

He added, “Akpabio’s legislative achievements are unparalleled. No other Senate President has made such a significant impact. Within just one year, Akpabio accomplished what others could not in eight years.”

“When things get tough in the Senate, he has a remarkable way of calming everyone down and taking charge of the situation.”

Okpebholo continued, “I want to thank Akpabio because when I first visited Akwa Ibom, I asked him why he brought me here. He told me, ‘I brought you here to see so that when you become Governor of Edo, you will replicate what I’ve done in this state.’”

“I am here today to say thank you to His Excellency, the Senate President. I have listened to your advice, and I want to assure you that we will do in Edo what we have seen in Akwa Ibom.”

In response, Akpabio expressed appreciation for Okpebholo’s humility and his people-oriented approach to governance.

He emphasised that Okpebholo’s willingness to learn from those who have already walked the path he is now taking is an indication that he will succeed in his governance.
