The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has urged the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr Nnamdi Kanu, to enable him to access proper medical treatment.
Azuta-Mbata made the appeal in a video message on Thursday, insisting that Kanu’s continued detention offers no advantage to the government.
He further urged the Federal Government to pursue a political settlement in Kanu’s case, stressing that prolonged incarceration only deepens divisions.
“I would like to call upon the Federal Government of Nigeria to quickly release Nnamdi Kanu. The Government has no serious advantage in keeping him. It must ensure his safety and welfare, and allow him to go for medical treatment as quickly as possible,” Azuta-Mbata said.
The Ohanaeze leader also appealed to Igbos across Nigeria to take part in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
“I’m calling upon Ndigbo, wherever you are in Nigeria, to quickly take advantage of the voter registration exercise. Go and get your cards as quickly as possible,” he added.
Kanu was first arrested in 2015 on charges of treasonable felony but fled the country in 2017 after being granted bail. He was rearrested in Kenya in June 2021 in a controversial operation and has since remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
