Ogun passes education fund bill

The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a landmark bill to establish the Ogun State Education and Skills Trust Fund, aimed at revitalizing educational infrastructure and boosting vocational training throughout the state.

The legislation, titled H.B. No. 034/OG/2024, was approved following a report by the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Yusuf Amosun.

After a unanimous voice vote and a clause-by-clause review, Speaker Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide directed that the bill be forwarded to Governor Dapo Abiodun for his assent.

In the same session, the Assembly advanced two other significant pieces of legislation through their second readings: the Ogun State Boundary Commission Bill, 2025, and the Survey and Geoinformatics Bill, 2026. Lawmakers, including Hon. Damilola Soneye and former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo, noted that these bills are essential for resolving land disputes, enhancing investor confidence through accurate geoinformatics, and ensuring peaceful coexistence among boundary communities.

The passage of the Education and Skills Trust Fund Bill represents a structural shift in how Ogun State intends to fund its human capital development.

By creating a dedicated trust fund, the state is moving toward a more sustainable, “ring-fenced” financial model that can shield education projects from the fluctuations of the general budget.

This is particularly vital as the state seeks to align its workforce with the technical needs of its growing industrial hubs in Agbara and Sagamu.

Simultaneously, the focus on boundary and survey laws addresses a long-standing bottleneck in regional development.

Accurate geoinformatics and clearly defined boundaries are the “hidden infrastructure” of a modern economy; they reduce the litigation risks that often stall large-scale agricultural and industrial investments.

Together, these legislative moves suggest that Ogun is prioritizing institutional stability, both in its people and its land, to maintain its competitive edge as Nigeria’s leading industrial destination.
