Renowned historian, Prof. Toyin Falola, has predicted that the reign of Olubadan-designate Oba Rashidi Ladoja will modernise Ibadanland.

Falola made this remark on Wednesday while delivering the First Olubadan Coronation Lecture organised in honour of Ladoja.

The lecture, titled Ibadan History: Issues in Tradition and Modernity, explored how tradition and progress could coexist under Ladoja’s reign.

Oba Rashidi Ladoja will be installed as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland on Friday in a historic ceremony.

Falola said Ladoja’s background as a politician, statesman, and businessman would drive development and improve economic conditions across Oyo State.

He stressed that even though Ladoja was not governor, his influence would help achieve many expectations placed on his leadership.

Falola urged Ibadan residents to embrace modernisation by adopting proper waste management systems and maintaining high standards of environmental hygiene.

He further encouraged the promotion of Ibadan’s cultural heritage, highlighting the city’s history of producing notable entrepreneurs, politicians, and professionals.

According to him, preserving heritage while embracing innovation would strengthen Ibadan’s status as a modern and culturally rooted Nigerian city.

Earlier, Prof. Amidu Sani, Chairman of the Coronation Lecture Committee, explained that the lecture highlighted Ibadanland’s intellectual tradition and corrected misconceptions.

Sani said the event celebrates the city’s progress and highlights opportunities for future growth and transformation.

Similarly, Chief Bayo Oyero, Chairman of the Coronation Committee, described the lecture as a platform for reflection and strategic guidance.

He noted that the conversation was not merely academic but a dialogue to shape Ibadan’s direction under the new Olubadan.

“We hope this lecture enlightens us and guides Ibadanland towards a strategic future under Oba Rashidi Ladoja,” Oyero said.

The event attracted several dignitaries, including University of Ibadan Vice Chancellor Prof. Kayode Adebowale, Lead City University Vice Chancellor Prof. Kamorudeen Adeyemi, and prominent Ibadan chiefs.
