OAU Students boycott lectures over campus transport crisis

Academic activities at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has come to a standstill as the Students’ Union began a three-day lecture boycott this Monday, April 13, 2026.

Orchestrated by the Students’ Union, the strike is a direct response to a failing transportation framework that has left thousands of students stranded despite the recent deployment of a new fleet donated by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

According to the union, the decision was reached following our one week observatory mode, and the subsequent joint meeting of the Central Executive Council (CEC), Hall Executive Council (HEC), and the leadership of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC).

While university management previously pleaded for patience to resolve initial logistical hurdles, student leaders argued that a week of observation revealed a system plagued by overcrowding, a shortage of operators, and an overall capacity that cannot sustain a community of over 35,000 people.

The Union’s leadership in a statement by the President and Secretary, Adelani David and Habeeb Oke has made their position clear, demanding an immediate return to the previous transit system until a more functional and expanded fleet is guaranteed.

Beyond just adding more vehicles, the students are calling for a seat at the table to ensure future administrative changes to campus mobility are both practical and reliable.

This three-day stay-at-home action, scheduled to conclude on April 16, serves as a formal warning to the university authorities. Should the administration fail to provide a workable solution within this window, the Union has signaled that the boycott will likely escalate into mass protests and campus-wide demonstrations.
