NYSC mourns former D-G, Col. Peter Obasa

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mourns its former Director-General, Retired Col. Peter Obasa, who died on Monday.

This is contained in a statement issued by Mrs Caroline Embu, the Director, Information and Public Relations of the NYSC on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to Embu, the Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, paid a condolence visit to the deceased’s residence in Ilorin, Kwara, where he commiserated with the family.

Nafiu described Obasa as a pioneer manager and one of the founding fathers of the scheme.

He said that Obasa laid the foundation for a strong administrative structure that sustained the scheme over the years.

According to him, Obasa’s tenure as the third Chief Executive of the NYSC, from 1979 to 1984, recorded tremendous achievements.

He appreciated the late Obasa’s contributions to the development of the NYSC and prayed for the eternal repose of his soul.

He said that Obasa’s death was not only a loss to his immediate family but also to the NYSC, adding that the scheme would continue to cherish his enduring contributions and memories.

He particularly commended the late former director-general for the encouragement and support he offered him while alive and assured the family that the NYSC would continue to build on the solid foundation laid by its founding fathers.

He said that the scheme would also strive to become stronger.

“I convey the condolences of the entire NYSC family to the Obasa family,” Nafiu said.

Responding on behalf of the family, Mr Victor Obasa appreciated Nafiu for the visit, describing his father’s death as shocking.

He said the family was grateful to God for the life of the late Obasa and the legacies he left behind.

“We are overwhelmed, and our family says thank you for the honour you gave our dad. We are very grateful to you for not forgetting him,” he said.
