NOHIL hosts global foot surgery training

The National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos (NOHIL), will host leading global foot and ankle surgeons for a specialised training programme.

The week-long programme aims to advance orthopaedic surgical skills and improve access to specialist foot and ankle healthcare in Nigeria.

The initiative is being organised in partnership with Steps2Walk and the Global Health Charity and Training Foundation (GHCTF).

Surgeons from the United Kingdom, United States, Türkiye, Pakistan, and Nigeria will participate in the programme from Aug. 10 to Aug. 14.

NOHIL Public Relations Officer, Mrs Ayo Adenike, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Lagos.

She said the programme would combine advanced surgical training, practical demonstrations, knowledge sharing, and humanitarian medical outreach.

Adenike said the initiative would strengthen the capacity of Nigerian orthopaedic surgeons through mentorship from internationally recognised specialists.

“The five-day programme will begin on Monday, Aug. 10 with an opening ceremony, didactic lectures, and a medical outreach,” she said.

She said the opening activities would hold at the Pavilion Hall, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos.

Adenike added that participants would engage in patient selection, case discussions, and lectures on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

She said a community medical outreach would also be conducted at General Hospital, Somolu, Lagos, benefiting residents with free healthcare services.

“The community will benefit from free medical screening services, including blood pressure and cholesterol checks, diabetes and malaria testing,” she said.

She added that the outreach would also include prostate-specific antigen testing and colorectal cancer screening, with referrals where necessary.

Adenike said live surgeries would take place on Wednesday and Thursday at NOHIL for participants to observe complex procedures.

She said international and Nigerian faculty members would perform the surgeries as part of practical learning sessions.

“The programme will conclude on Friday, Aug. 14, with post-operative patient reviews, hands-on cadaveric dissection and interactive case discussions,” she said.

Adenike said the collaboration reflected Steps2Walk’s commitment to sustainable orthopaedic education through global partnerships and continuous capacity development.

She said GHCTF’s involvement demonstrated its commitment to improving healthcare access and promoting community wellbeing through medical outreach.

The spokesperson said the initiative aligned with NOHIL’s commitment to specialist healthcare advancement and improved patient outcomes.

She added that the programme would further strengthen professional training and expand access to quality orthopaedic services in Nigeria.
