No final decision has been taken on new NYSC uniform — Minister clarifies

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande has clarified that the Federal Government has not yet adopted any specific fabric to replace the traditional khaki for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The minister’s clarification comes on the heels of widespread media reports on Thursday morning, which suggested that the government had finalized plans to replace the iconic khaki with locally produced Adire fabric.

These reports rapidly circulated following Olawande’s earlier appearance on Channels Television, where he discussed the comprehensive overhaul of the 53-year-old scheme.

Addressing the news reports, Olawande explained that his references to indigenous textiles like Adire and Ankara during the interview were strictly meant to serve as examples of the numerous proposals currently on the table.

He stressed that the government is carefully evaluating various design options that must fulfill essential criteria, specifically focusing on a professional outlook, a unique national identity, durability, functionality, and overall cost-effectiveness.

He also urged Nigerians to direct their attention toward the substantive goals of the ongoing NYSC reforms, cautioning that the conversations around the uniform should not overshadow the initiative’s broader objectives.

According to Olawande, the sweeping reforms are strategically designed to align the NYSC with current economic realities.

The core focus areas include improving graduate employability, actively promoting youth entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, and facilitating a much smoother transition from formal education into productive careers.

Reiterating his commitment to an inclusive and transparent process, the minister assured the public that all future decisions regarding the NYSC including any potential redesign of the uniform will be strictly guided by extensive stakeholder engagement.

He also expressed gratitude for the constructive feedback received thus far and maintained that every proposal will be meticulously reviewed to ensure it serves the best interests of the scheme and the nation.
