NISO, WAPP emphasize on quality technical standards in regional grid synchronization

Receiving a delegation from WAPP in Osogbo, the engagement serves as a critical precursor to the Phase II regional grid synchronization scheduled for June 2026, a milestone expected to transform electricity trade and stability within West Africa.
The technical sessions focused heavily on the mechanics of system readiness and the rigorous operational protocols required to maintain grid stability during the transition.
Experts from both organizations reviewed the cross-border coordination frameworks essential for deepening real-time interconnection, ensuring that the diverse power infrastructures of member states can operate in a unified, harmonious rhythm without compromising national energy security.
Engr. Nafisatu Asabe Ali, NISO’s Executive Director of System Operation, emphasized that the organization is leaving nothing to chance regarding the technical requirements of the project.
She reaffirmed NISO’s commitment to a seamless synchronization process, noting that the agency is currently intensifying advanced system studies and accelerating its grid modernization initiatives.
According to Engr. Ali, these efforts are being coupled with a renewed focus on operational discipline to ensure that Nigeria’s infrastructure is fully prepared to lead the regional integration.
Commending the progress made so far, WAPP Secretary General, Abdoulaye Diaw, highlighted the National Control Centre’s technical evolution as a positive indicator for the project’s success.
He stressed, however, that the ultimate success of the June 2026 target hinges on sustained compliance with regional operational standards.
By aligning technical specifications and operational mandates, the partnership aims to create a more resilient and efficient energy market that can meet the growing industrial and domestic demands across the West African corridor.
