NIMASA to mark day of the seafarer in Lagos

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) will join the global maritime community in celebrating the 2026 Day of the Seafarer on June 25.

The event, scheduled to hold tomorrow at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, is aimed at recognising the vital contributions of seafarers to global trade, economic growth, and supply chain operations.

This year’s celebration is themed, “Carrying World Trade. Carrying the Risks,” highlighting the critical role seafarers play in ensuring the smooth movement of goods across the world despite the numerous challenges and risks associated with their profession.

In a statement announcing the event, NIMASA commended the courage, resilience, professionalism, and dedication of seafarers worldwide, particularly Nigerian seafarers whose efforts continue to support international commerce and strengthen the nation’s maritime sector.

The agency noted that seafarers remain indispensable to the global economy, serving as key players in transporting goods across continents and sustaining supply chains. It added that Nigerian seafarers have continued to represent the country positively in the international maritime industry.

NIMASA also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the welfare, safety, security, training, and professional development of seafarers in line with international standards. The agency called on stakeholders across the maritime sector to support initiatives that protect seafarers’ rights and improve working conditions within the industry.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, will attend the event as the Special Guest of Honour. The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Fatima Sugra Tabi’a Mahmood, will serve as the Chief Host, while the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, will host the celebration.

The Day of the Seafarer is observed annually to honour maritime workers and raise awareness about their contributions to global trade and economic development.
