Nigeria's alarming descent into violence 

Nigeria was once again reminded of the fragile security situation that continues to affect communities across the country in the opening two months of 2026. In Kauru, Kaduna State, gunmen attacked a village, killing three residents and abducting more than a dozen, including a Catholic priest. Earlier, deadly raids in Kwara State left scores dead, homes destroyed, and families traumatized. These attacks underscore the daily reality of fear and uncertainty that millions of Nigerians face.

While these tragedies are deeply concerning, it is important to recognize the efforts of the federal and state governments, as well as security agencies, in addressing the crisis. Troops have been deployed to affected areas, intelligence-led operations continue, and there is ongoing collaboration with local communities to prevent further attacks. These steps show that the authorities are actively working to restore safety, even as they face a complex web of challenges, including organized criminal networks and the difficult terrain of some regions.

Nevertheless, the human toll cannot be ignored. Ordinary citizens, already burdened by economic pressures and social instability, are left vulnerable. Families grieve lost loved ones, children are frightened to attend school, and farmers fear tending their fields.
