Raphael Aduroja Olaleye, 39, from Osun State, Nigeria, is living in fear after refusing to subject his daughter to female genital mutilation (FGM) — a traditional “spiritual cleansing” ritual practiced in his community.
Raphael began opposing the practice after his young cousin died from excessive bleeding during a similar ritual. His public stance angered community elders, who accused him of rebellion and disrespecting their gods.
After his daughter was born in 2020 traditional priests demanded she undergo the same ritual. His refusal led to threats, attacks and even kidnapping. On 20/08/2023 he was attacked, kidnapped, tortured and his 2 upper front teeth was removed and hospitalized
Despite reporting the incidents, police refused to act, dismissing it as a “family matter.” Raphael says his life remains in danger:
“I don’t want to lose my life or that of my daughter. I just want to live in peace and protect her from this harmful tradition.”
Human rights groups continue to call for stronger enforcement against FGM, which remains widely practiced in some Nigerian communities despite being banned by law.
