Nigeria has achieved a historic milestone on the global stage, earning two prestigious international awards for its outstanding strides in digital governance at the 2025 Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit held in Spain.

The nation’s groundbreaking recognition underscores its growing reputation as a global leader in technology-driven transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in governance.

At the summit, Nigeria clinched the Regional Award for Africa and the Middle East, acknowledging its commitment to advancing Open Digital Governance across the continent.

The country also emerged as the overall global winner in the Digital Governance category, beating 160 commitments from 42 participating countries to secure the coveted Thematic Award.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in partnership with civil society organisation Dataphyte, led the initiatives that earned Nigeria the double honour. The recognitions highlight NITDA’s relentless pursuit of an inclusive, citizen-centred digital ecosystem and the success of Nigeria’s collaborative approach between government and civil society.

Through forward-looking policies and innovation-driven governance frameworks, Nigeria is setting new standards in how data openness and technology can enhance public accountability and rebuild trust in institutions.

The winning commitments showcased Nigeria’s strategic framework for digital transformation anchored on transparency, accessibility, and inclusiveness as promoted by NITDA under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

With these global honours, Nigeria has reinforced its position as a continental powerhouse and an influential global voice in shaping the future of open and digital governance.
