Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Olufemi Oloruntola, has led a senior Nigerian delegation to the 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in Kingston, Jamaica, as part of efforts to secure Nigeria’s election into Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council.

The team included the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dayo Mobereola, and the Ministry’s Director of Maritime Safety and Security, Mr Babatunde Bombata.

The mission represented a major step in Nigeria’s campaign to join the IMO Council, capitalising on the shared membership of the 167 ISA states, all of whom are also members of the IMO.

Alongside the election campaign, the delegation held strategic sideline meetings on deep-sea mining regulations, marine environmental protection, sustainable resource use, capacity building, technology transfer and long-term planning for the Blue Economy.

These discussions reinforced Nigeria’s commitment to developing its maritime sector in line with global standards and advancing environmentally responsible economic growth.
