Nigeria ranks sixth globally as app downloads soar by 320%

Nigeria is experiencing a digital revolution, with app downloads surging by 320 percent in just two years, placing the country sixth globally in mobile app growth, according to Google.
Highlighting the trend, Google’s West Africa Director, Olumide Balogun, described Nigeria as a rapidly evolving mobile-first market where digital engagement is intensifying. “The digital pulse of Nigeria beats fastest on mobile,” Balogun said, noting that Nigerians now spend over four hours daily on mobile devices, with 80 percent of that time dedicated to app usage.
Projections show that mobile app usage and purchases across Africa could hit N1 trillion by 2025, while smartphone access is expected to reach 880 million users by 2030. Monthly mobile data usage is also forecast to triple, signaling immense potential for digital businesses.
Balogun emphasized that mobile apps have become central to how businesses operate, innovate, and engage customers. “Apps are no longer optional. They are the engine of customer engagement and business growth,” he said.
He urged Nigerian marketers to adapt quickly to this shift, stressing the importance of treating the customer journey as seamless across apps and browsers. He also noted that app users are more loyal, spend more, and engage more deeply than traditional web users.
With digital privacy gaining importance, apps offer marketers an opportunity to gather direct, consented data. To grow their app user base, Balogun advised businesses to leverage targeted campaigns, especially through platforms like YouTube and Google’s vast display network.
“YouTube remains one of the top platforms for discovering new apps and products,” he added. “With nearly two billion logged-in users monthly, it’s where people spend more than a billion hours each day watching video content.”
The surge in app downloads reflects a broader digital transformation underway in Nigeria, opening new pathways for businesses, marketers, and innovators ready to capitalize on the app economy.
