…Says Gov’t institutions have failed Nigerians
…Claims families can no longer feed under APC-led economy
…Describes political defections as betrayal of the people
The Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised alarm over what it describes as the disintegration of Nigeria under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, asserting that the media remains the sole institution standing between citizens and complete national failure.
Speaking to journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Akure, the PDP condemned the performance of the three arms of government, stating that the executive, legislature and judiciary have all fallen short in safeguarding the welfare and democratic rights of the Nigerian people.
The party linked the country’s worsening economic hardship and growing insecurity to what it termed the “colossal failure” of the APC at both the federal and state levels.
“I am disheartened by the state of affairs under the ruling party. Inflation has reached unprecedented levels, essential goods are beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerians, and many families can no longer afford daily meals,” said Mr Leye Igbabo, the Publicity Secretary of the Ondo PDP.
Calling on the press to strengthen its watchdog role, the PDP urged journalists to remain steadfast in holding those in power to account. The party described the media as the last bastion of hope for ordinary Nigerians.
In a formal statement signed by Igbabo, the party declared, “The APC government has driven millions into poverty. Institutions that were designed to serve as checks on governmental abuse have been crippled. It is now left to the media to uphold democratic values and defend the public interest.”
The PDP also took aim at the recent spate of defections by politicians into the ruling party, labelling it a cynical manoeuvre that undermines democratic integrity.
“What we are seeing is not borne out of ideology or service to the people, but raw self-interest. These defections represent a desperate scramble by politicians to remain in favour under a faltering regime,” Igbabo stated.
He further alleged that the APC has deliberately weaponised poverty, using the economic crisis to control public sentiment and loyalty. According to him, the population is being driven to the brink, with survival now dictating political alignment.
“Life under the current administration has become unbearably difficult for the average Nigerian. This hardship is being exploited by the ruling party to manipulate the public. But the people are losing patience,” he warned.
The PDP concluded by encouraging citizens to remain alert and rally behind democratic institutions, particularly the media, which continue to demand transparency and accountability from those in power.
